The CDIA Board in its meeting of Jan 19, 2010 has decided to set up a Disaster Relief Action Committee (DRAC) to handle the planning, day to day operations, communication and decision making for the disaster relief efforts for the people of Haiti. There will be specific emphasis on, but not limited to, helping those in the Delmas area of Port au Prince where we have been involved in the community up to date.
For the immediate term, disaster relief funds will be used for food, water, medical and housing needs of the CDIA team on the ground in Haiti and for the people in the area of Port au Prince that the organization serves. Funds will also be used to support the staff of the families of Adoration Christian Center and members of the First Presbyterian Church. In the longer term, disaster relief funds will be used, the Lord willing, for the long term restoration and rebuilding of the Adoration Christian Center.
This action committee will consist of:
- John Kottelenberg (Chair) - CDIA Managing Director
- Bernie Pennings - Executive Director of Word and Deed
- Randy Lodder – Adoration Christian Center Project Director
- Steve Langendoen - CDIA Board Vicechairman

For the past two weeks Randy Lodder has been in Canada while our Adoration team in Haiti continued the food program for school families. It is a huge blessing that Randy could be reunited with his wife Karen and daughter Maia. Randy could spend some quality time with his family while at the same time get a break from almost six weeks of long days responding to immediate Disaster Relief. While in Canada, Randy was able to go to the Missionary Institute Centre in Toronto where our Canadian staff receive mission counseling whenever they return from the field.
The Adoration team here (Randy, Karen and Kim) were able to meet several times and consider the future task that lies ahead. The Board was also able to meet with the team. It was decided that Kim Gringhuis would return to Haiti with Randy. We thank Kim for the many presentations she could make at schools during the time she was in Canada. On Friday, February 26, Randy and Kim left in a snowstorm for Haiti. They arrived safely on Saturday.
While meeting with the Board, Randy was able to share the beginnings of an interim plan for Adoration. Randy is hopeful that upon his return he will have access to a vacant property. More details will follow, but the Lord willing, this location will serve as the Adoration Christian Centre and a temporary location for medical, school, storage depot etc.
The container that was filled in part by many Adoration supporters was delayed for a time. Originally the container was to be delivered via a port in the Dominican Republic, but shipping costs became prohibitive due to unexpected taxes and new fees. The delay was necessary to give time to find a more efficient route into Haiti. The container will now be shipped directly to a Haitian port. Besides tents, food and medical equipment, the container contains a coverall building structure which will be used as a temporary building on a vacant property.
In the past week, our sponsors have been sent a letter asking them for patience while we continue to assess the status of our students and their families. About 75% of our students have been accounted for and, of those, almost 100% are displaced, meaning that they are not living in their homes, but in tent cities or in the countryside. We continue to have hope for the remaining 25%, knowing that many families have fled the city. We pray that in the coming months we will have a clearer picture of the needs of the Adoration community and how the people can best be helped.
Adoration stands at the beginning of new plans on how to serve the people of Haiti with the wonderful support of so many in Canada. As Christians, we have the privilege of prayer. Please pray for Adoration that it may seek His will on how to move forward and that Adoration may be a hand and a foot to the people of Haiti. May the future efforts of Adoration strengthen families in Haiti to serve God and their neighbours that His name may be glorified! |

As previously reported, Randy Lodder was able to come back to Canada for a short time to rest and to spend time with his wife, Karen and daughter, Maia.
Last week, the CDIA board had the privilege of meeting together with Randy and Karen Lodder and Kim Gringhuis. Randy had his guitar with him and we were able to praise God through singing together before the meeting was called to order. Randy gave a full update on what has been going on as far as the Adoration Christian Centre goes. It was a blessing to be able to hear about the situation firsthand and to be able to ask questions and get answers in person.
The restoration of Adoration Christian Centre was discussed. Randy was able to report on potential locations for a temporary school and medical clinic as the current location is too damaged to work with. He is also looking into possibilities for the longer term future of Adoration Christian Centre. We give thanks to God for providing these options and pray for wisdom in the decision making process.
Plans are already being made for Randy’s return to Haiti. The idea is for Kim Gringhuis to return with him. She hopes to stay with friends while assessing the situation. Kim’s organizational skills will be of great help to the Adoration Team and she is longing to get back to work in a country she has come to love.
On the homefront, CDIA is so thankful for the outpouring of support by the reformed community here and throughout the world. Countless fundraisers have been held from individuals going door to door, to giant garage sales, to benefit concerts and church collections. The list goes on and on. Prayers also continue to go up for the people of Haiti and the many aid organizations there. Thank you all for your support. We see God’s Hand supporting us through you. To Him be the glory! |

It is hard to believe that almost four weeks have past since the earthquake in Haiti. We give thanks to God for sustaining His people, especially in Haiti, during this time of hardship.
Randy Lodder and his team continue to work hard to gain access to food and drinking water for Adoration Christian community and beyond. The current routine is expected to carry on for the next couple of weeks until the supply lines open up in Port au Prince. The evenings continue to be a blessing as people gather together to be strengthened spiritually through reading of scriptures, singing and prayer.
Contingency plans are being put into place to allow Randy to get a short break in the near future. We thank God that the daily routine for the Adoration Team has stabilized sufficiently at this time for this to even be contemplated. Progress is also being made on the medical front as reported recently, "In the last few days, the medical relief effort has moved from a phase characterized by a high volume of critical surgeries and untreated earthquake injuries into a new phase of more post-operative care with a renewed emphasis on public health and infectious disease prevention."
In Haiti and around the world, organizations are working together and pooling resources to ensure effective relief efforts. CDIA has been overwhelmed and is humbled by the support it has received from the Christian community in Canada and elsewhere. Numerous individuals and businesses are doing what they can to help. Many fundraisers have been held or are being organized. Recently, a business made a container available for shipment of supplies to Haiti. Donations of goods are currently being collected at many Christian schools in southern Ontario. We pray for God’s blessing on these efforts.
Your continued prayers for the people of Haiti, all relief and government agencies including the Adoration team and CDIA are coveted.
May God receive the Glory! |

As reported previously, contingency plans were being put into place that when the timing was right, Randy would be able to get a break. We are happy to report that the time came sooner than later and Randy is now back in Canada for a short time and reunited with Karen and Maia Joy. We are very thankful for God’s hand in bringing Randy home safely. |

There continues to be good communication with Randy and the team (Adoration). They are in good health and spirit and have all that they need for everyday living.
Late last week Randy was at the UN again. It is reported that the city has been divided into 16 different sections and that one global organization has been assigned to each section to take responsibility for day to day Disaster Relief supplies. Once again, an application was made for Adoration to be included in the general supply lines for local distribution. However, more patience is reguired and it is expected that a good flow of food and water will most likely take another week or two.
The supply of food to our target zones is minimal. Therefore, our plan is to continue to push food and water out for another 2 weeks, until the local residents in our target zones can be diverted to another source. Last Saturday, Adoration was successful in getting a truck load of food and some tarps from the Dominican Republic. This food was packaged into boxes and then distributed to all of our students and families. The plan is to make another run this week. Adoration continues to supply truck loads of water which are dumped into a cistern in the Cite aux Cayes area. This is working well in this area as leaders in the community are taking charge of water purification and distribution. Unfortunately, a good clean cistern and leadership cannot be found as yet in Cite Jeremie.
Randy continues to keep in touch with the families of students. Most are living in some make shift dwelling. Some of the tarps and tents handed out earlier are already being used. Some of the homes are still standing. However, the people are afraid to move back in, but when the rains come they will have no choice. Sourcing tents for families continues to be a priority. Tents with floors in them is important so that when the rains come not everything will get wet. In that regard, CDIA is sourcing a limited number of tents and other supplies to be shipped to Haiti in the coming weeks.
Our Adoration Haitian team members have been asked to be translators for volunteer medical staff. At times this too is very unorganized. Nevertheless, Adoration continues to provide help to the general community via other relief organizations where it can.
Prayer and service meetings continue to be held outside the gate and this will remain a priority. This week these neighbourhood meetings will start at 7pm so that more people can come. It is our prayer that this will continue to be a blessing for the Adoration team and the community, and that through it our neighbours would be drawn into fellowship, and drawn into hearing God's Word being shared. “Oh, Holy Spirit, work powerfully and open up hearts to hear your calling”
Your continued prayers for the people of Haiti, all relief and government agencies including the Adoration team and CDIA are coveted.
May God receive the Glory! |
