| Haiti Update - January 27 |

As time continues dealing with the earthquake in Haiti does not get easier. Just watching the news quickly gives you the sense that the search and rescue is over. The next phase of providing the basic necessities of life is now beginning to take the focus. Although the adrenaline of the situation may start to wear off the real work will need to continue for quite some time. Contact with Randy is now happening on a regular basis. Randy is in good spirits and besides doing relief work with our Haitian brothers he has had the opportunity to share the love of God and His Word to many, especially in the evenings. Randy continues to focus his work in Delmas, our target area in Port au Prince. He has been networking in the community to locate as many of the students and their families as possible. Families are asked to complete surveys so that the needs in the community can be more specifically determined. It will be difficult to contact all students as some families have moved out into the countryside. A few water distribution centers have been set up. Randy with the help of local community pastors locates an available cistern. Water is then purchased and trucked in. The local folks are taught how to treat the water with water purification tablets. This program may be expanded if it proves to be efficient and effective. Randy has also been able to obtain some food which has also been distributed. Work is on going in trying to establish a continuous supply of food by contacting international relief agencies. A minimal number of tents for shelter have also been distributed with special attention being given to the families of studenst attending Adoration school. A request for more tents is in process and we are awaiting a decision. Networking with other organizations is going to be very important. As the aid moves forward, we will need to assist each other in security, maintaining food and material supply chains, and avoiding duplication in one area while another area may be ignored. The DRAC committee continues to work in close contact with Randy in determining appropriate means of action. It is not possible to make long term plans as the there are still a lot of question about the future. Will the government resettle many to new areas? If so will the target areas CDIA is concentrating on be affected? With many of the people moving back to their rural areas, how will that affect the future of the school? What are the plans of the First Presbyterian Church? What needs to be put in place even of a temporary nature to protect people from the elements, fore example, the rainy season set to begin in a few months? ... and many more such questions need to be answered, once the basic necessities of life are taken care of. To keep the community updated, communications will be posted twice a week, Tuesdays and Fridays. This will be done for the next number of weeks to keep our supporting community informed on what the team on the ground is doing in regards to Disaster Relief. We again covet your prayers for the people of Haiti and especially for Randy and the team. |
